Well, I told you I would take you along on my journey to get The Little House ready to live in. We started by having the place repainted a soft color from Sherwin Williams called Biscuit. What? You liked that yucky mustard color? :) While our house was on the market I started working on the kitchen here in February and the first thing I did was paint over those pale yellow cabinets with a bright white.
So here is the before and after of the painted cabinets.
Another before and after.
We're keeping the old butcher block like countertops because they're in pretty good shape. I wanted to show you the Rooster wallpaper I put up many moons ago. I still love it.
Here's the stove hood I painted with heat resistant paint 9 years ago and it still looks pretty good. Another keeper.
Well, I just couldn't live with the yucky almondy yellowed underside of the hood so guess what? I went and bought some more heat resistant paint - white - and sprayed the underside and it helped to make it look almost new. It really was smelly, I'm tellin' ya! Almost passed out again! I probably got fumes on the brain and stuff.
I found these cute little knobs from Hobby Lobby online for $2.99 each! What a bargain and I thought they were pretty cute and Jadeite looking. Alas, I'm not bringing my Jadeite ~ it got packed.
So the cabinets got painted white and with the added knobs I thought it was looking pretty spiffy!
I used a very shiny enamel paint. I know you're really supposed to use a satin finish for kitchen cabinets but the room is so small and the wallpaper is rather dark and I wanted the kitchen to be shiny so the light could bounce around. You can see the pass through to the living room and see how small this place really is.
So I patched it...
Not perfect and the olden wallpaper had faded a little but it'll do. It does look better in person. The only backsplash is on the stove side and was this nasty beigey colored laminate. Well, I didn't like it and decided to fix it! I painted the laminate with some primer, let that dry and then hung some beadboard wallpaper over it.
I liked it!
I don't know how well you can see the beadboard wallpaper here but it looks SO much better and SO clean and white! Only one little lone red cow creamer. I packed the other ones!:( I will survive though).
So there you have my little redo of the kitchen in The Little House. Now I'll have to decide what to poke in here!

You are so clever and you have a very good eye. I particularly liked your wall paper patch job. Me, I'd just stick a picture frame over it. LOL. xo
ReplyDeleteSheila, you are a woman after my own heart! I am also a wallpaper patcher from WAY back and I have also used the high-heat paint and nearly asphixiated myself when I painted my brass fireplace doors black a couple of years ago...but they sure look great! Your cabinets look awesome painted the crisp white and the little green knobs are perfect. What a great idea with the beadboard wallpaper and it looks amazing against the red rooster wallpaper.... it's lookin' lovely!!
ReplyDeleteShelia, everything looks so bright and shiny. Your little kitchen is great. I always loved a kitchen where you can see into the dinning and living rooms, especially if you have company. That way you can be part of the conversation. Looking forward to seeing your new little home.

ReplyDeleteThe white paint makes it look so fresh, Shelia! I'll bet it looks even better in person. How great that you actually had some of the wallpaper left. Otherwise, I was going to suggest getting creative with wall décor. : )
ReplyDeleteYou're going to have a cute little kitchen. Love the green enamel knobs for the cabinets!
ReplyDeleteWow, you have made a huge difference Shelia! How great that you were able to patch the wallpaper in the kitchen and not have to replace it as that would have been a big job to try and do whilst moving in at the same time! Love your little green doorknobs! xx

ReplyDeleteHi Shelia, Pure love in your sweet little kitchen. The painted cabinets and pretty green knobs are awesome and what a great fix for the patch. You lucky girl to find some leftover wall paper. Love the roosters. That beadboard wallpaper looks like real wood. Love it and what a difference it makes. You did such a fabulous job with this fix. I can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeleteHave fun!!
Still having blog issues here with receiving posts and comments. I just got this post now. You asked about the biscuit jar. It was a blue glass container with no lid. I ended up selling it a few years ago.
You also asked about the tray and the little bud and leaves off to the side. Those were already on that vintage piece. Something very different and rare to find.
Sending hugs~
XOXO
Wonderful changes in your little kitchen Shelia! Each one made such a difference!
ReplyDeleteYour new home is coming along great Sheila dear! I agree that white is so much better and it just made your cute knobs pop!
ReplyDeleteSuch a difference, love your white cabinets and your knobs are perfect!

Cindy

Yep..not laughing here!!! Nope. It's going to be a little doll house..I can see it coming. :)
ReplyDeleteThose are some great changes Shelia. I like the bead board wall paper! We have a spot on the kitchen wall where the old wall phone was and the original wall paper is still there too so I just hang the calendar over it. :) I wanted the paper as a reminder of what was there when we bought the house 37 years ago.
