Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Hello, Dear Ones. Well, today is sort of a different post for me. It's all about the hair! I decided two years ago to grow my tiny little short hair out long. You know how that is...the time your hair is awkward, can't do anything with it. But I kinda liked it as it was getting below my ears and was really excited when I could pull it back and then wear it up. You see my inspiration was to grow it long and wear it up in a bun like my beautiful friend Mona who blogs at Wsprsweetly of Cottages. She's so pretty and I loved how she wore her hair up. Okie dokie. I just tried to make my little bun and updo look elegant but I just couldn't do it! I thought I looked messy and my hair just never looked really neat to me. So what did I do? Grabbed my hair cuttin' scissors and razor and went to town. Now I've always cut my own hair but other than trimming I hadn't cut short hair in two years!! I took the first cut and I was scared! Then I kept clipping and looked like Natalie Wood in the movie 'Daisy Clover', but not as cute as her.

I almost called my daughter's hairdresser to ask her to finish it up, but no, no, Nannette! I'm a stubborn one and kept on chopping!
My hair ended up looking like it had looked the last 20 years. Well, minus the two of growing it out. I see so many of you and my friends who can wear their long hair down and it looks so pretty. Not me, honey! No way! I have the straightest hair you've ever seen. It's thick but baby fine. So when it gets any length to it, it just goes flat to my tiny little head. I had even put a perm in it to give it a little more body but still had to wear it up because it didn't look good on me down. Oh, by the way, I really don't have eight fingers, you're just seeing me and a little extra in the beveled part of the mirror! :)
Now don't you laugh! I didn't have a snap of me with my hair down so I drew some on to show you the length it had gotten. Are you laughing? I heard you!! ;) Well, this picture above really looks better than my own hair did.  So you can see why I had to cut it! I COULDN'T STAND IT ANY MORE!!!
I wanted to look beautiful like Mona. Couldn't do it. I wanted to have a back view of my hair like my friend Janie at Blondie's Journal (I've always loved her hair too). Oh, and I can't forget my most recently famous friend Diana at Nana Diana Takes a Break. Look at her gorgeous hair and she wears it down! Shoot! I just looked like a drowned rat! I had no choice but to get chopped! I heard that giggle!
So here I am again...freshly chopped. I left it longer in the back than usual because the hair at my neckline swirls around and will stick up. But I'm trying to keep it down. Don't know if I can train that part or not. I'm using the curling iron for awhile. It's a very funny thing to me. As straight as my hair is, I can curl it with the curling iron and it curls and stays in when it's short. I'm strange, I tell ya! I've also decided not to color my hair for a while and see what I get. I am almost white at the right side of my bangs. There's some shiny hairs in the back. So we'll see! One thing about it, wearing it so short, I chop on it about every two weeks so the color will be gone pretty quickly.
Here I am on another day with my blow dried hair. I'm trying to train it with my round brush. I don't want to rip out the curling iron every time I fix it! Can you tell any difference? Which way do you like it best? Blow dried or curled?

Now I'm not really vain but I do like to look neat and I do feel better about myself. Mr. Precious likes my hair much more and so does my daughter. I'll have to watch myself though because I feel really empowered with my scissors and razor in my hand! I have been known to get carried away and cut my hair way too short! So if I do, it'll grow!

Okie dokie! Just wanted to share my tiny not self with you all because I love you! Like I said..hair today, gone tomorrow!

Be a bunch of sweeties,
Shelia ;)

I'll leave you with a little Note Song ~

Hair

She asks me why, why I'm just a hairy guy.
I'm hairy noon and nighty night night, my hair is a fright.
I'm hairy high and low, but don't ask me why, cause he don't know.
It's not for lack of bread, like the Grateful Dead.
Darlin'

Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair.
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen.
Give me down to there hair, shoulder length or longer hair
Here baby, there, momma, ev'rywhere, daddy, daddy.

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair. Flow it, show it, long as I can grow it, my hair.

I'd let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees, give a home to the fleas in my hair.
A home for the fleas, a hive for the buzzin' bees,
A nest for birds, there ain't no words for the beauty, the splendor, the wonder of my:

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it, long as I can grow it, my hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty,
Oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, streaming, gleaming, flaxen, waxen,
Knotted, polka dotted, twisted, beaded, braided,
Powdered, flowered and confettied, bangled, tangled, spangled and spahettied.

Oh say, can you see my eyes?
If you can, then my hair's too short.

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair. Flow it, show it,
Long as God can grow it, my hair

They'll be ga-ga at the go-go when they see me in my toga,
My toga meade of blond, brilliantined, biblical hair.
My hair like Jesus wore it, Halleluja I adore it, Halleluja Mary loved her son, why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Folw it, show it
Long as God can grow it, my hair

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, hair, hair
Folw it, show it
Long as God can grow it, my hair
~ sung by The Cowsills

  1. I would give anything to have your thick head of hair! Your hair looks lovely, both curled and blown dry.

  2. oh Shelia, my hair is just like yours! my face is small so I look ridiculous with longer hair, and it ages me horribly! so short it is. you look great!!

  3. I wish I had long, thick beautiful hair like my daughter, but I don't. My hair is thin and sparse. I haven't had long hair in over 20 years. This post is great timing because I was just actually thinking of trying to grow it out again, but I doubt that's gonna happen. :-)

Personally, I like your hair better short. But then, you're so pretty and you have such a good heart, that you look great no matter how you wear it. xo

  5. I feel your pain! I have to keep mine pretty short too. Though, I do like your yarn hair photo. Not a bad look! ;-)

  6. Wow I am amazed that you cut your own hair! Your hair looks so pretty blown dry or curled. How nice too to have stopped coloring your hair too. I know this is a big trend now and my mom has stopped coloring her hair and I know a blogger friend is doing the same thing. Thanks for sharing your hair with us today!
    Have a nice week.

  7. Shelia, I think your hair looks wonderful. I think short hair is far more becoming on an older woman than long...maybe because I can only let mine grow so long and then I have to get it cut. Whether or not it looks better, short hair is much easier to maintain!

  8. You did a marvelous job! A lady I know who has cutie-pie hair also cuts her own. I tell ya' . . . it's worth trying, with the hassle, cost and trouble of making an appointment these days! I'll snip a little here and there, but I don't think I could do anything as wonderful as you!
Good job . . . you look like a million!

  10. Shelia, I am proud of you for trying to grow out your hair and then admitting, it isn't for you. I love you hair short and have wondered in the past if you would cut it again. It's cute and flirty and fun! I love it both ways (curled and blown dry). You are adorable and now your hair is adorable too!!

  11. I can't imagine being able to cut my own hair and look that pretty!! What a great job you do. I love it short...it makes your gorgeous eyes show up. I've been growing mine out some too. We will see. :)

  12. You do look good in short hair. I have the same problem I haven't had long hair since I was fourteen years old when I cut it off myself. Like to have got a whipping for it too. I had big waves across the back of my head it looked awful so I cut it off. So good that you can cut your own so well. I don't try cutting mine anymore. I have stop putting color on my hair too for several years now. I like the curly look on you best.

  13. I think you are totally adoreable and I love your hair short. I can't wear mine long either. Mine is also super fine and not really very thick, so short and teased is what I have to do, or it lays so flat on my head that it looks like a cap.

  14. I like it short on you, Shelia. Both looks nice. I'm a big fan of short hair if it suits. Sassy!! Hugs, Deb

  15. You look gorgeous - can't believe you did that yourself! You are going to put hairdressers out of business, my dear! LOL on explaining your extra digits, haha.

That Cowsill song will now be in my head for DAYS - I played it for my young nieces about 2 months ago and they'd never heard it and laughed and laughed. It stayed with me for weeks, and now this.....oh boy!

  16. I am so impressed that you can cut your own hair..it is lovely!!! Both styles are awesome and I love the grey!! I haven't colored my hair for 1 1/2 years now and it is so freeing!!

  17. Shelia ~ you are so cute just the way you are! Not everyone can wear short hair as well as you do. Your face is so adorable that your cut just frames it perfectly. I like it best blown out. And by the way, a visit to you always puts a smile on my face :-)

  18. You looks so cute. I like it short best, you look much younger with short hair. I also like it curled but the blow out version is adorable too. Why not flip between the two different looks? If you feel like curling go ahead if not just blow out with the brush.

  19. I didn't see your hair long, but it sure is cute short, Shelia!
I wish I was brave enough to cut mine, but I hate to do my hair.

  20. Curled or straightened ~~ you are adorable! Yes, the short "do" is more flattering ... I simply cannot believe you did this yourself!!

  21. I like your hair short it looks terrific on you and makes you look younger. I have left my hair go natural and I love it. You look beautiful my friend.

  22. Shelia, you look adorable! I'm impressed that you cut and styled your own hair. Wow!
I tried short hair in the 1980s. Couldn't wait to grow it back out, but it took a long time. I have to be able to put it in a French braid or pull it back in a ponytail. ;-)

  25. Oh my gosh, I just LOVE it! You are just as cute as a button anyways and now you are even cuter! I'd say you look at least en years younger! I like it styled both ways, with the latter looking a tad more casual. You did good, girl!

  26. Hi lovely lady. It's been a longgggggggggg time.
You look so cute with your yellow hair missing you in Texas.

  27. I know just how you feel, Shelia! I go to a hair stylist to get my hair cut and then come home and fine tune it myself. I've tried numerous times to grow my hair out, but it overwhelms my small face, so short it is! You did a great job cutting your hair and I think you always look sharp, long hair or short.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Your short hair is adorable and I'm so excited that you are back to "you" and not having to fuss with the hair too much, that it feels the way it should be. I so understand. I have longed to have nice long hair that I could do a million things with but with my curl, as soon as it gets a bit too long, it gets frizzy and crazy. So, short it has been, short it will be. I've actually learned to love it that way -- very easy to manage. Oh, to have had that confidence when I was in high school!

  29. Hi Shelia!

I love it both ways! Cannot believe you cut it yourself. So talented!

  30. I've always loved your hair short...and love it now. I prefer the curled look...but either way, you're gorgeous!!

  31. This is your look Shelia! I can't believe you can cut your own hair! Save the curling for Sunday's and special events. You look great both ways!

  32. I love the short hair do, curled or brushed. I think you look younger with it cut short. I'm trying mine long at the moment but not sure whether to get it cut off next time. Enjoy your day,

    Diana

  33. Love both styles on you.....maybe the curly one for special times and blow dry for every day. You did a terrific job cutting it......amazing!!! You are so cute anyway!!! I keep my hair long and gray now, love to wear it up and in a pony tail. When its short......tons of frizz, and because my hair is thin, a lot of scalp shows. So long it is for me!! And I praise God every day that I'm no longer 'chained' to coloring!!! xoxoxo

  48. You did a great job. I was a hairstylist before becoming a nurse. I've cut my hair for several years now. Mostly because my friend cuts it so short when she cuts it (I used to work with her and she is still a stylist). I cut mine one day last week cause it had just gotten to that this hair is so long I can't stand it any longer. Mine is chin length. It looks best when I put a few hot rollers in it.

  49. You are just too brave and talented with scissors!!! I love your hair both ways actually!!! Great pictures of you Pretty Lady!!!

  51. First of all, I am SO impressed that you cut your hair by yourself, and it turned out that fabulous! That's some impressive skills! :) And secondly, you'd seriously be beautiful with any length hair, but I do really like it shorter on you, looks so pretty! ~Rhonda
