Foodie Friday

Welcome to Foodie Friday and I'm so glad to get to take part in this wonderful event hosted by our Most Wonderful Diva of Everything, Gollum. Please go to visit her at Designs by Gollum for more food players today!

During our Cousin Reunion, we all drove to Mentone, Alabama, just around the corner from Desoto State Park and had lunch upon the huge wrap around porch of The Mentone Springs Hotel. The weather was so good to us and it was cool with a little tiny breeze, just perfect for an out on the porch lunch. Look at that charger below!
You know I have to slip a little bit of my trip in here... ;) You'll still love me, won't cha? I just wanted to share a little history with you. ~ the old hotel was built in 1884 by Dr. J. Frank Caldwell of Pennsylvania. He had visited here on Lookout Mt. while ill and his health was restored after drinking the mineral spring water on the property! He sold all his possessions, moved to Mentone and built this wonderful Queen Anne Victorian Hotel, which is the oldest hotel in the state of Alabama.

There are only nine guest rooms here! Wish we had known about this place - I would have escaped a few nightmares! :) Anyway, the wrap around porch sprawls across the entire length of the building and my cousins and I had a lovely time of chatting and eating.
Now our Dear Gollum has said we can post any kind of food - made from scratch or whatever. So I'm showing you my tiny lunch.

As you can see, I feasted on this beautiful wedge salad with homemade blue cheese dressing, grape tomatoes, carrots, purple onion slices and bean sprouts on the side. Yummyness! I did share some with Mr. Precious! ;)
Guess what this is? I think it almost looks like sweet rolls of some kind. No no Nannette! It's green fried tomatoes! I had one and they were delicious!
You know I must share a little with you. Right across from where I sat on the porch was this old weather worn cupboard! Oh, if this little darling could talk ~ I'm sure she would have had many tales to tell me of what dishes she had held.
Here is a little Koi pond in front of the hotel. I just thought it was the cutest thing! Look at the fish drooling all over the place! I'm so glad I didn't see this before I ate! I could have lost my appetite! :)

More twig furniture. I love this stuff!
No place is perfect with out a rooster and here is a glorious yard bird with his little chicky!
I just had to show you the bathroom. It was so cute and a little gawdy! But hey, if I were built in 1884 I'd be gawdy too! :)
No trip is complete for me without at least one Bathroom snap! I pulled Mother into the Bathroom snap with me. What a glorious vision we are! Hey, why is my tiny face always so shiny!! Smile, Mommy!
There you have it, Dear Bored Ones, my Foodie Friday with a little of my visit to Mentone, Alabama thrown in!

Be a bunch of sweeties,
Shelia ;)

I'll leave you with a little Note Song~

Mountain Music

Oh, play me some mountain music
Like grandma and grandpa used to play
Then I'll float on down the river
To a Cajun hideaway

Drift away like Tom Sawyer
Ride a raft with ol' Huck Finn
Take a nap like Rip Van Winkle
Daze dreamin' again

Oh, play me some mountain music
Like grandma and grandpa used to play
Then I'll float on down the river
To a Cajun hideaway

Swim across the river
Just to prove that I'm a man
Spend the day bein' lazy
Just bein' nature's friend

Climb a long tall hick'ry
Bend it over, "skinnin' cats."
Playin' baseball with chert rocks
Usin' sawmill slabs for bats

Play some back-home, come-on music
That comes from the heart
Play something with lots of feelin'
'Cause that's where music has to start

Oh, play me some mountain music
Like grandma and grandpa used to play
Then I'll float on down the river
To a Cajun hideaway, hey hey

Oh play me mountain music
Oh play me mountain music
Oh play me mountain music
Oh play
Yeehaw

  33. Hubby and I stayed in that hotel one night probably about twelve (?) years ago. My son was filming a movie that was being shot in Mentone, and we were extras in the film. The scene we were in was shot in the ballroom of that Hotel. Alas, we wound up on the "cutting room floor" thus nipping our promising movie careers in the bud!

It was a real dump back then, but not long after that, an interior designer from Birmingham bought it, and renovated it, and turned into a great B&B. I have heard that it has become quite the charming place with really good food.

Your post makes me want to go back.

One final thought: at the time they had an "antique" shop -- really a collection of dilapidated old junk originally from the hotel. The owners at that time were undercapitalized and were trying to raise money any way they could. I am still sick that I didn't buy a very long wicker sofa which was only about $100! I thought it needed too much work, so I passed. Now I would grab it in a heartbeat!

Glad to see that it has been refurbished and seems to be thriving now. I can just imagine enjoying lunch on that beautiful porch. Your salad looks so good! Always good to see you and your Mom together. You both are just radiant. Have a great weekend.
